About the fence

A fence is a low barrier used to shape a yard, block line of sight, and slow movement rather than to fully stop zombies. In Project Zomboid zombies can climb over short fences, so a fence is a delaying and channeling tool, not a true wall. Used well it breaks up sightlines, marks safe paths, and creates pinch points where you can pick off climbers one at a time.

Placement & defense tips

  • Use fences to force zombies into a narrow climb-over point next to your shooting or melee position, so they arrive one at a time and slowed.
  • A solid fence section can block a zombie's line of sight to you, reducing how many get aggravated as you move around the yard.
  • Combine fences with a deeper interior wall: let the fence be the outer nuisance layer and a full wall be the real barrier, with a kill zone between them.
  • Avoid fencing right up against a window or door, since a climbing zombie that drops over lands directly at your weak point.
  • Run fences along your garden or generator area to outline it and discourage casual wandering through, without wasting heavy materials on a perimeter you don't need sealed.

Choosing a variant

  • The Wood Fence (Light) is quick and cheap to build for outlining yards and gardens, but it offers little durability and is purely a delay against climbers.
  • The Metal Fence (Medium) is sturdier and a bit harder to destroy, making it a better choice where you actually want to slow a crowd rather than just mark a boundary.
  • Because zombies vault both types, treat fences as a secondary layer; if you need something they truly cannot pass, build a proper log or wall section instead.
  • Match the variant to effort and threat: light wood for decorative or low-risk borders, metal where a fence is doing real channeling work near a fighting position.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on a fence as primary defense and assuming it stops zombies, when they simply climb over given time.
  • Building a continuous fence with no controlled climb-over point, so zombies pile over in random spots instead of where you can fight them.
  • Placing fences flush against the base wall, letting climbers drop straight onto your walls or windows.

Frequently asked

Can zombies climb over fences in Project Zomboid?

Yes. Zombies can climb low fences, so a fence only slows them and does not seal a perimeter. Use it to channel and delay, not as a final barrier.

Is a metal fence worth it over a wood fence?

A metal fence is tougher and harder to break, so it's worth it where you want to slow a horde near a defended point. For simply outlining a garden, a wood fence is fine.

How do I make a fence useful for defense?

Leave a single climb-over gap next to your fighting position so zombies come over one at a time and slowed. Pair it with a proper wall behind for a real barrier.
