About the light

A ceiling light provides illumination inside your base and is powered through a connected generator once the regional power grid shuts off. Beyond visibility, working lights make a base feel livable and ease nighttime tasks, but they consume generator fuel and can draw attention. They are a quality-of-life and morale-oriented fixture rather than a defensive structure.

Placement & defense tips

  • Place lights only in rooms you actively use after dark, such as the kitchen, crafting area, and sleeping quarters, to limit generator load.
  • Avoid lighting rooms with windows that face open ground at night, since glowing windows can make your base more conspicuous.
  • Cluster powered fixtures near the generator's connected area so a single generator covers your most-used spaces efficiently.
  • Keep at least one well-lit interior workspace for reading, crafting, and first aid, where good light reduces fumbling at night.

Choosing a variant

  • The standard ceiling light is the common interior fixture; its value comes entirely from being wired into a running generator after the grid fails.
  • Since the light itself is cosmetic until powered, prioritize securing a generator and fuel over installing many fixtures.
  • Consider that more powered lights mean more fuel burned, so balance comfort against your generator's gas supply.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting lights to work after the power shutoff without a connected, fueled generator.
  • Lighting too many rooms and burning through generator fuel faster than necessary.
  • Leaving lights on near street-facing windows at night, which can make the base stand out in the dark.

Frequently asked

Why don't my lights turn on?

After the in-game power grid shuts off, lights only work if you have a generator connected to that part of the building and it is fueled and running.

Do lights attract zombies?

Lights themselves are quiet, but the generator powering them is noisy and lit windows can be noticed, so the overall setup can draw attention.

Are lights worth the generator fuel?

For your main work and sleep rooms they help with nighttime tasks and comfort, but lighting the whole base wastes fuel for little benefit.
