About the stairs
Stairs connect floors of a building and are central to one of the most reliable defensive tactics in Project Zomboid: living on an upper floor. Because the vast majority of zombies cannot climb, destroying the bottom staircase with a sledgehammer seals the upper levels off from the horde entirely. This makes a second-story base one of the safest setups available with minimal materials.
Placement & defense tips
- ▸Build your living, sleeping, and storage area on the upper floor, then plan to destroy the lowest staircase (a sledgehammer is required) to cut off ground-level access.
- ▸Keep a sheet rope or another stair you can quickly rebuild as your real entrance/exit once the main stairs are gone.
- ▸Position stairs over a tile with clear floor above and below so the staircase can extend properly between levels.
- ▸Don't place upper-floor windows or balconies where a zombie pathing fix or a future game mechanic could reach; keep the upper edge sealed.
- ▸If you rely on cutting off the stairs, keep a sheet rope for access and store enough planks and nails upstairs to rebuild a staircase whenever you need to come down.
Choosing a variant
- ▸Wood stairs are the standard player-built option, requiring planks, nails, and a saw plus carpentry; they're cheap enough to rebuild as needed.
- ▸Higher carpentry produces sturdier stairs, but since the staircase tactic relies on removing them rather than defending them, raw durability matters less here than for walls.
- ▸Plan around the fact that stairs occupy a fixed footprint over three stacked tiles, so reserve that vertical column when laying out an upper-floor base.
Common mistakes
- ✕Destroying the stairs without a backup way down, such as a sheet rope, leaving you stranded upstairs.
- ✕Forgetting that you still need clear ground-floor space below for a future staircase if you ever want vehicle or cargo access.
- ✕Assuming all upper floors are automatically safe; leaving an intact staircase or an accessible window can still let zombies up.
Frequently asked
Can zombies climb stairs?
Yes, regular zombies can use intact stairs to reach upper floors, which is why players destroy the bottom staircase (with a sledgehammer) to cut off access.
How do I get up and down after removing the stairs?
Most players attach a sheet rope or rope to an upstairs window and climb that, then remove or ignore the staircase for defense.
Do I have to rebuild the whole staircase to come down?
Stairs cannot be partly removed — they are destroyed with a sledgehammer and must be rebuilt from scratch, so most players simply use a sheet rope to get up and down instead.
