About the window

Windows are one of the most common ways zombies get into a building, since an open or broken window lets them climb through just like a survivor can. In base planning, every street-facing window is a weak point that needs to be barricaded, curtained, or barred, and managing them well is often the difference between a quiet base and a constant breach.

Placement & defense tips

  • Prioritize barricading windows that face roads, parking lots, or zombie spawn directions first; interior-facing or fenced-yard windows are lower risk.
  • Hang curtains (or sheets) on any window you'll have lights or activity behind so zombies passing by are less likely to spot you and start banging.
  • Keep one or two windows on a quiet side lightly secured or curtained-only as a deliberate scouting or escape point rather than sealing the building completely.
  • Pair an upper-floor window with a sheet rope as an emergency exit, and don't fully bar that window or you lose the escape route.
  • Remember you can still climb through your own barricaded windows after dismantling, so plan which ones stay as your in/out path.

Choosing a variant

  • Plain (Flimsy) windows offer essentially no protection; treat any unmodified window as an open door for zombies.
  • Barricaded (2 planks, Light) is fast and cheap early protection that buys time but can be torn down by a sustained group.
  • Barricaded (4 planks, Medium) roughly doubles the planks for noticeably more durability and is a solid standard for perimeter windows once you have lumber.
  • Metal Bars (Heavy) are the strongest option and let you still see and shoot out in some cases, but they require metalworking and propane, so reserve them for the highest-traffic windows.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving windows plain because the doors are barricaded, forgetting zombies climb through windows just as easily.
  • Barricading every window solid, then having no quick exit when the ground floor is overrun.
  • Ignoring curtains and running lights at night, which attracts zombies to the glass even on an otherwise secure house.

Frequently asked

How do I stop zombies from climbing through windows?

Barricade them with planks and nails for layered protection, or install metal bars for the strongest seal. Curtains alone hide you but don't physically block entry.

Do I need to barricade from inside or outside?

Plank barricades can be applied to a window, and adding planks from both sides increases total durability. More planks means more hits a zombie must land to break through.

Can I still see out of a barricaded window?

Fully planked windows block your view, while metal bars and curtains behave differently. Many players leave one window curtained-only so they can peek at the street before going out.
